Alan Dershowitz loudly told everyone that he wanted to testify about Jeffrey Epstein. He said he would do so “at any time” and would be “delighted” and “happy” to take the oath and tell the world that the “vast majority” of women claiming to be victims of Jeffrey Epstein are false.
He even wanted to make sure it was open and filmed. For example, this appearance with Greta Van Susteren a month ago.
Well, he was called to testify for a videotaped in-person interview on Monday.
My friends, he doesn’t show up.
Shocking, I know.
In his defense, all his bluster was referring to a live theatrical event on C-SPAN and the House Oversight Committee and Monday’s meeting — although transcribed and recorded — did not appear to be a live-streamed event. He may also have a problem with the fact that Comer subpoenaed him by letter rather than by subpoena. But, without wanting to be completely textualist, “at any time” means “at any time”. He and his lawyers had the opportunity to demand a live hearing — and a subpoena — before booking Monday’s interview. Now it’s heading off into the Friday news dump.
Politico says the oversight committee requested a delay and Dershowitz did not respond to the outlet’s request for comment.
Many criticized that Dershowitz only took a hardline stance hoping the House would never call again, noting that most of his public assertions about his desire to testify were accompanied by vague assertions that neither side would be satisfied with his testimony. But we here at Above the law understand that Dershowitz would never use his media appearances to make non-specific – and therefore impermissible – claims that he could not support Epstein’s victims! No, we’re savvy enough to understand that Dershowitz can’t make it to his Monday meeting with Congress because it’s prime “Martha’s Vineyard hates me” season and those pierogi stands and public libraries won’t unwittingly become pawns in his lust for attention if he has to waste time in Washington.
Perhaps he will address the Committee one day. But for now, his message is this: be like Alan Dershowitz…and keep your (under)pants on.
