Painting MDF cabinets? Are you trying to figure out how to do it the right way? This article will walk you through the entire DIY project. Get a smooth finish!

Painting MDF cabinets is great. It is cheaper, more manufacturable, and cheaper than wood, making it ideal for painted or decorative cabinetry. However, if you are painting MDF, you will face one problem. Anytime you cut an edge, it leaves an ambiguity. Watch the video above to see what you can do to ensure a smooth finish on MDF.

Things I used in my MDF cabinet painting project:

Primers for MDF:

  • Ben Zinsser It is my favorite because it dries faster and sands easier.
  • But I also love Original Kiehl’s and Cover Zinsser stain. All of these products are solvent based, so cleaning is a pain.
  • both of them Zinser and Keels You have a few versions of water-based primers to prevent stains. They clog sandpaper more than solvent-based products. But I still use it when I want easy cleaning.
  • Instead of primer, some people use water-based polyurethane (eg Minwax polyacrylic) to seal MDF. It dries quickly and sands very well. But it’s not actually a primer and paint may not stick to it either.
